Winter Fuel for the Poor
The winter period is a hard and very expensive time for people in eastern Europe.
In countries like Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria temperatures can drop to as low as -30.
Many
families especially Roma families live in simple houses without much
insulation, some families live in 'houses' which are more like shacks.
Inside it will be just slightly warmer than outside. Sufficient heating
will is essential,
In the villages people have to buy wood, which is expensive. In the towns and cities, they live often in apartment blocks where they have to pay for communal heating. The prices for gas and electricity are similar to the prices in western Europe. Utility bills often cost as much as a month’s salary, or more!
